How To Replace A File Cabinet Lock
Although a file cabinet is not a safe that keeps the most precious things, it still may be used as a storage of important documents and personal belongings. So, if a file cabinet lock somehow breaks, it needs to be repaired or replaced. Keep reading and you’re going to find out how to replace a broken file cabinet lock in 5 easy steps!
First, to change the lock, you need to remove its closest drawer. The easiest way to do it, if you don’t have a key, is to turn the cabinet upside down, as many of these locks work by gravity. If it doesn’t help, use a regular drill for a lock cylinder. When the drawer is removed, get a pair of pliers and take out the C-clamp at the back of the lock and disconnect the mounting link. Only then you’ll be able to remove the defective lock out of the slot.
Next, take a new lock and insert it in place of the previous one, ensuring the key is inside of it. Use the existing screw holes for this procedure. Then put the C-clamp of the desired lock into the hole.
While holding the clamp at the inside of the cabinet, insert its two prongs into the pre-drilled holes of the lock to secure it in place.
Make sure the parts of the lock are not sticking out of the cabinet and you can easily close the drawer.
Check if the key turns in the lock without problems before closing the drawer.
If all the actions above were performed correctly, the mission is completed. Congratulations! You’ve just changed the file cabinet lock by yourself!
